know how to operate on layers makes our work with photoshop much easier. Many of yours will also discover many functions which they have no idea ;)
short cut:

Selecting icons in tool panel

Top side:

4 - Lock transparent pixels
If for example we paint using brush on a layer where is some element which does not cover all space of document - we can not cross with brush behind border of this element. it means than we can not paint on a free area of a layer.
For example: If we active this icon ona a layer 0 and we try to cover all area with some colour using brush - we paint only woman, flower, but we do not touch sea, sky, etc.

5 - Lock image pixels
W can not edit this layer (painting, filters) but we can move elenents on this layer.

6 - Lock position
We can edit elements on this layer but we can not move them.

7 - Lock all
Block all possibility editing layer. It is a good idea to protect in this way layers that we do not want to change.

8 - Add a layer style
Quick access to different layer styles (shadow, inner glow, pattern overlay, etc.),

9 - Add layer mask
Creates active mask. Using mask we can precisely select, eliminate layer area, create transparency layer etc. In few tutorials i will show how to apply to different subjects.

10 - Create a new set
We create in layers panel "new folder" (set). We can move here lots of different layers. Next we can lock them, make them invisible. We can also using arrow roll all layers and close them in one folder. We can save lot of space in layers panel. Very usefoul tool if we are using many layers in similar application - for example during creation of rank page picture for internet forum.

11 - Create a new fill or adjustment layer
This function create new layer with suitable mask, depends what we choose in menu. It is a specific layer with mask that we can use to modify some area of layer placed below (Ctrl + G).

12 - Create a new layer
Create new "blank" layer above active layer.

13 - Delete layer
delete active layer. If there ia a mask on it - function first remove only mask leaving layer. Second use this tool will delete layer. Similar is with group of layers.

Select layer with colour

If we do not use layer thumbnails, or element is too small to be visible on a layer thumbnail - we can help us to remeber what is on a layer using seven different layer colours. Just click RMB on a eye icon and select from menu interesting colour.

Change layer name

To change layer name just double click at layer name and write your layer name. it is good to name layer to hel to identificate what is on that layer. For example "hair".
We can also click RMB ona a specific layer and from menu choose: Layer Properties and here in field Name (Nazwa) write your layer name.

How to change miniature on layer

To change size of thumbnail click RMB on a free space below layers and choose proper size:

Large

Medium

Small

None

If we have many layers and it is not so easy to find free space below them - click small arrow and in menu choose: Palette Optionson a bottom of menu
will open thumbnails size menu. Select what you want and pressOK.
